Details

Name Department Information
Rex Adams and Tom Harlan Tree Ring Lab Practical Dendrochronology - the TRUE meaning of the universe
Students will learn how to take a piece of wood that was used in an archaeological site, accurately determine when the tree from which the wood came grew, and utilize that information to reconstruct the history of the site.
Jon Alberding Biomedical Engineering You Scream, We Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream
Jon Alberding (aka "The Iceman") will demonstrate the wonderful fun that can be had with liquid nitrogen and fine dining.
Ann Baldwin Physiology Blood and Guts!
Students will learn by, seeing hearing and feeling, how blood flows through the different types of blood vessels in the body, and how molecules, such as glucose and proteins, get from the intestine to the bloodstream, and vice versa. They will have the opportunity to use microscopes and other props to demonstrate what is happening.
Bruce Bayly Mathematics Hands-On Math
Although Math by itself is something people do with their brains, plus paper and pencils, most Math concepts come from the world around us. Numbers, lengths, areas, shapes, and patterns all make more sense when you can make and touch them in real objects. More complicated math comes from the science of Physics, which is about forces and motions of all kinds. We will introduce students to force, motion, sound, and other aspects of physics which you can touch and feel the Math in.
Phyllis Bolt Bannister Student Financial Aid Student Financial Aid - getting ready for college
Book Fair   Scientific books from Borders.
Faith Bridges Mathematics and Computer Science Computers, calculators, and the internet
Each camper will have his or her own email address with which to communicate with each other and with friends and family elsewhere. Also, campers will visit interesting web sites and will be able to communicate with scientists at various sites. The draw feature of the graphing calculator will be explored along with other features.
CeDRR Tour   A tour of CEDRR's facilities
Gary Chandler Materials Science and Engineering Visit a scanning electron microscope.
Sarah Dahl and Vic Wells Microelectronics Lab Visit a "clean room".
Jane Erin and Irene Toper Special Education Scoping it out: looking at the world beyond arm's reach
The participants will make a telescope to learn about its parts and capabilities. For example, when looking through the telescope, why does everything look upside down? What is needed so that objects, events, and people look right side up. The participants will also complete hands-on activities/games as they use monocular telescopes of different magnification powers. Aided visual skills such as focusing, tracing, scanning, tracking and scanning will be taught within the context of the games.
IBM   An off-campus visit to IBM, including lunch.
Ali Mehrabian Civil Engineering Building and Testing Model Bridges
We will have fun talking about civil and structural engineering and how bridges work. We will build small model bridges out of tooth picks and Jelly Belly candies. We will design them and draw sketches of our design before building them. We will also test our model bridges and load them until they collapse.
John Olson IBM From RAM To ROM: What's Inside My Computer, and How Does It Work?
The basics of personal computers will be explained interactively by passing around the pieces that go inside a PC. The computer will then be put back together so that the campers can see it work. Afterwards, each camper will be assigned to "be" a part of a PC and they will work together to execute a few instructions.
Erin Sabatke Optical Sciences Shock Your Friends by Trapping Your Enemies
This course will introduce you to basic electronics and optics by building a portable alarm system. Use it to protect the door to your bedroom, fort, or other favorite place or thing! You can make an alarm sensitive either to pressure or to motion, and we will experiment with different output alarm signals - flashing lights, buzzers, even musical chords. Your parts can be used for other projects, too, and a guidebook will be included.
Tod Santee TUSD High School Biology Teacher Grocery Store Botany
A look at everything from the plants you buy for Mom to the plants you get for dinner. You will have the chance to explore the things you see everyday but very seldom take time look at very closely. See why they are so important and find out how different they are, how similar they are, and bizarre they are.
Ronnie Sidner Ecological Consultant Mammals with Wings
Students will observe 1) characteristics of bats that are shared with all other mammals, and 2) characteristics of bats that make them unique among mammals. Presentation is lecture/demo format with slide presentation, and discussion with video and tape recordings from live animals.
Richard Thompson Geosciences Be a Paleontologist
Students will identify a fossil bone found in the Santa Ritas. They will discover where the rocks that the bone was found in belong in the regional column of rock layers. This will place an approximate date on the bone, and introduce them to local geology. Then they will compare the bone to the figures of bones from animals alive at that time to make a final identification.
Marc Tischler Biochemistry How spaceflight affects humans
An opportunity to view NASA videos, discuss the challenge of a trip to Mars, consider how disabilities may be changed in space, simulate the "no hands" approach to eating in space.
Connie Walker National Optical Astronomy Observatory Comets
Emory Williams   Magician
