Monday, May 5 We discussed what is on the final, the format of the final, how to study for the final, etc. Come to class prepared on Tuesday with any specific questions from the study guide. Thursday, May 1 We finished up the discussion on inverse functions and practiced problems from Section 8.6. Start working through the Study Guide for the Final Exam (posted on the Algebra Page (link at left). Answers will be posted next week. Try to get through as much as you can before they do get posted! Tuesday, Apr. 29 We reviewed some transformations, then continued on to symmetry (about the y-axis and the origin) and inverse functions. Please read Section 8.6 thoroughly! Checkpoint #10 will be on Thursday. Monday, Apr. 28 We reviewed some composition and combining of functions, then generalized transformations to include all functions (not just quadratics). Thursday, Apr. 24 We went over the exam, looking at other (non-algebraic) ways to solve the test questions. Then we reviewed characteristics of ARC (average rates of change)--priming you for the 4th project. Finally we started on the remaining material in th eclass. Today we focused on combining functions and composition of functions. We worked through pp. 139-142 in the workbook. Project 4 (last one!) will be due next Tuesday. Thursday, Apr. 17 Review for Exam 3. Checkpoint #10 is posted already. Tuesday, Apr. 15 (Tax Day!) We looked at more examples of piecewise-defines functions, namely examples of graduated tax systems. We worked through workbook pages 54 (#5), and 55-58. Checkpoint #9 will be on Thursday, April 17. Problems are posted on the Homework schedule. Exam 3 is on Tuesday, April 22. It will cover Ch. 6 (logs and solving exponential and log equations), Ch. 8 (8.1-8.3, Quadratics), and Ch. 3 (3.1, 3.2, and 3.4; systems of linear equations and piecewise-defined functions). Remember that your workbook has review questions at the back. Look at problems $74-95, 116-133, and 139-153, starting on workbook p. 166. Monday, Apr. 14 We finished up systems of linear equations, looking at problems 2, 3, 5, and 9 on pp. 49-50 in the workbook. It's good practice to finish the rest of the problems on those pages. We then moved on to piecewise-defined functions, pp. 51-54. Checkpoint #9 will be on Thursday, April 17. Problems are posted on the Homework schedule. Thursday, Apr. 10 We continued discussing systems of equations, and I referred to Alg. Aerobics 3.2a #2, and Alg. Aerobics 3.2b, #4. We then went to applications of systems of linear equations. We worked through most questions in the workbook from pp. 45-47. Checkpoint #9 will be on Thursday, April 17. Problems are posted on the Homework schedule. Remember that workbook pages 117-118 are due on Monday. Tuesday, Apr. 8 We finished up the unit on quadratics by reviewing the usefulness of discriminants, how to tell how many solutions a quadratic equation has, and how to find the equation of a quadratic by looking at the graph. We looked at the following questions from the workbook: p. 110 (#5b), p. 114 (#3), and p. 121. Pages 123-124 would also be great review before the exam, although it is not assigned. Toward the end of class we started Chapter 3, looking at systems of linear equations. Checkpoint #8 (sections 8.1 and 8.2) will be on Thursday, April 10. Problems for Checkpoint #9 have already been posted. You should be able to work through the problems from Sections 8.3 and 3.1. Workbook pages 117-118 have been assigned as a homework assignment due Monday, April 14. Monday, Apr. 7 We continued transformations, looking at Workbook pp. 109 (#2) and 110 (#5a). We also looked at minimize/maximize problems, and solving quadratic equations (see workbook pp. 119-120, #3, 4, and 8). The Project 3 quiz was given today. Checkpoint #8, originally posted for Tuesday, April 8, will be postponed until Thursday, April 10. It will still cover sections 8.1 and 8.2. Thursday, Apr. 3 We started the section on transformations. We worked through pp. 111-112, and the top of p. 109 in the workbook. The Project 3 quiz has been postponed to Monday's class. Checkpoint #8, originally posted for Tuesday, April 8, will be postponed until Thursday, April 10. Tuesday, Apr. 1 We started the section on quadratic functions. We looked specifically at how the sign of a (the leading coefficient of the x2 term) affects the graph of the functions. We also discussed the domain, range, focal length, and vertex given an equation in standard form. We ended with trying to convert the function from standard (a-b-c) form to vertex (a-h-k) form, by completing the square. Please read sections 8.1 and 8.2 in the text. We worked through pp. 107-108 in the workbook. Checkpoint #7 was today. The log quiz was returned (please correct these on your own time, and ask if you have questions about it). Project 3 is due on Thursday. The related Project 3 quiz will be given at the end of class on Thursday. Monday, Mar. 31 Today is the last formal discussion of logs. We finished working through pp. 97-98 in the workbook, and also looked at text exercises #82 and #107. This was followed by a log quiz. This was not for points, but rather as an eye-opener. We won't be seeing these for awhile (probably until the test), so expect to see more quizzes like these to keep you up to speed on them. Project 3 has been posted. It is due on Thursday, April 3. Checkpoint #7 will be on Tuesday, April 1 (no joke!). Thursday, Mar. 27 Today we finished Section 6.5, revisiting solving log and exponential equations. These are applications, like pp. 95-98 of the workbook, where you are required to find the model, then use it to answer another question. Please have problems 4-8 on pp. 97-98 completed by Monday. You will be presenting them to the class! Project 3 has been posted. It is due a week from Thursday, on April 3. Checkpoint #7 will be on Tuesday, April 1. Tuesday, Mar. 25 Today we covered Section 6.5, changing the bases of exponentials. We worked through pp. 99-101 in the workbook. You will be turning in p. 101 at the beginning of class on Thursday. All corrections are due tomorrow (Tuesday). Please do not erase your original work. If you never turned in p. 77, you may turn it in Tuesday for half credit. Thursday, Mar. 13 Today we continued Sections 6.1 and 6.3 in the text. Please read through these sections. We worked through more problems from workbook pp. 85-86. Tuesday, Mar. 11 Today we continued Sections 6.1 and 6.3 in the text. Please read through these sections. We practiced using the log properties more today, as well as applied them to solving exponential and log equations. We finished workbook page 75, and worked through selected problems from workbook pp. 85-86. Specifically, problems 1, 2, 3, and 7. We have Checkpoint #6 at the end of class Thursday. The problems are posted on the homework schedule. Also, p. 77 from the workbook has been assigned. It is due on Thursday as well. Again, you are given 8 statements, and you need to see if they are correct. We discussed learning styles and how to study for "higher learning". You can find the presentation at http://appl003.lsu.edu/slas/lsoweb.nsf/index. Select "Guest Entry", then click "Continue" on the next screen. We went through the "Test Preparation" workshop in class. You can find the description of the learning styles from the online survey here. Read through them, see if your survey results match what it says. Then look at the study tips they give for your learning styles. Tuesday, Mar. 4 Exam 2 Please complete and print off (or write down) your results to the Learning Styles survey online at http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html. Monday, Mar. 3 Today we went over the study guide for Exam 2. In addition to Checkpoint #5, this comprised our review for Exam 2. Thursday, Feb. 28 Please work on the study guide for Exam 2 before Monday. At the end of the pdf file, there is a list of problems from the workbook that are also applicable, with answers posted on the Algebra Page. Today we looked at applications of exponential functions including half-life, doubling time, and compound interest. Refer to p. 81 in the workbook. We have Checkpoint #4 at the end of class today. Be prepared for Checkpoint #5 at the start of class on Monday. Tuesday, Feb. 26 We reviewed finding regression equations using the calculator and interpreting the results. We did an example similar to the Project 2 Quiz. We also reviewed finding linear and exponential equations from 2 given points. In the little remaining time that we had, we discussed p. 67 in the workbook, and talked briefly about doubling time and halflife. We ran out of time for Checkpoint #4 today, so it is rescheduled for Thursday. Problems for Checkpoint #5 have already been posted. #5 will be 1 week from today. Teams must submit a team contract by Thursday! Monday, Feb. 25 Read sections 5.5 and 5.6 in the text. Today we discussed the difference between the growth/decay factor versus the growth/decay rate. We used Algebra Aerobics 5.3, #3 as an example in class, as well as problem #69 from the text exercises. We then did an example of exponential regression using Table 5.13 on page 286 of the text. Checkpoint #4 is scheduled for tomorrow. Problems for Checkpoint #5 have already been posted. #5 will be 1 week from today. Teams must submit a team contract by Thursday! Thursday, Feb. 21 Read section 5.4 in the text. Today we discussed the effect of C and a on the graph of an exponential function. We used workbook pages 63-66 to guide us. Please work through these pages if you have not already. You should be able to find the equation of an exponential function from a given graph after completing this section. Project #2 quiz was given at the end of class today. Tuesday, Feb. 19 Read section 5.2 in the text. Today we discussed the difference between exponential growth and linear growth. You should be able to find the equation of an exponential model and/or a linear model from two distinct points. You should also be able to distinguish between linear and exponential growth given a table of values. Checkpoint #3 was given today. The next checkpoint is scheduled in a week. Project #2 is due on Thursday. You may make corrections to workbook pp. 59-62 to earn back points. Do NOT erase your original work. Either use a separate piece of paper, or clearly identify which is your correction for each problem. Even if you did not turn in the pages yet, you are eligible for make-up points. Monday, Feb. 18 Read sections 5.1 and 5.3 in the text. Today we discussed exponential growth and decay, and the standard form of an exponential function. Exercises are posted already for Checkpoint #4 which is a week from Tuesday. Checkpoint #3 (on linear regression and exponent properties) is tomorrow. Don't forget that Project #2 is due on Thursday, and the respective quiz will be given in the last 20 minutes of class on Thursday. Thursday, Feb. 14 Read sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5 in the text. These are the only sections we will be covering in Chapter 4, dealing with properties of exponents, when the exponents are positive, negative, and/or fractional. Workbook pages 59-62 are due on Monday. This is a 10-point assignment. BE SURE TO READ THE DIRECTIONS CLOSELY! Tuesday, Feb. 12 Read section 2.9 and the Extended Exploration which follows Chapter 2. Tuesday, Feb. 5 Read section 2.4. We continued working with linear functions, particularly in applications. We looked at p. 29 in the workbook, and numbers 106 and 146 in the Ch. 2 exercises (please bring #146 to class on Thursday, completed). We also discussed "slanting the data" to make your argument stronger. Checkpoint #2 was given today. Project Assignment #1 is due on Thursday. The first Project Quiz will be given in the last 20 min. of class on Thursday. Monday, Feb. 4 Read sections 2.5-2.8. We reviewed linear functions, from slope-intercept form, to finding and interpreting slope, seeing the effect of m and b on the equation, finding the equation of a line given two points, given a slope and a point, given the intercepts, or given a line parallel/perpendicular to it and a point. We worked through pp. 31 and 33-34 in the workbook. Checkpoint #1 was given today. Checkpoint #2 will be tomorrow. Thursday, Jan. 31 Read sections 1.4, 2.1 and 2.2. We reviewed finding domains of functions, and calculating and interpreting average rates of change. We worked through problems 6, 9, 17, and 22 in the Chapter 2 exercises (pp. 106-109). Due to a clerical error on my part, I did not have copies of Checkpoint #1. This will be given on Monday instead. Checkpoint #2 will be on Tuesday. See the HW schedule for specific problems. If you did not turn in Page 17 from the workbook, turn it in to my office by Friday if you want credit. Tuesday, Jan. 29 Read sections 1.4, 2.1 and 2.2. We started off the class by working through workbook p. 25, and following it with the 60-second summaries from pp. 27-28. We used the graph on #3 to review characteristics of graphs: increasing, decreasing (and interval notation), concave up, concave dowm, turning point, point of inflection. We also discussed Average Rate of Change (ARC). Page 17 in your workbook is due in class on Thursday. Include your examples. Monday, Jan. 28 Read sections 1.2 and 1.3. We started off the class by working through Algebra Aerobics 1.2b, #1 to review solutions to equations. We then continued this idea by discussing/defining "functions" (section 1.3). We talked about workbook pages 13-14, and worked through pp. 15-16, and select problems from pp. 21-24. You should complete the ones we did not get to in class. We also formed teams in class. The first Project (and project quiz) will be due a week from Thursday. You can find the project information under the "Projects" link at left. Thursday, Jan. 24 Today we applied the topics we covered from last Thursday and Tuesday (mean, median, grequency histograms, etc) to the technology on computer: Excel. We are working with the file FAM1000.xls. You will need to download this for your first homework assignment. Tuesday, Jan. 22 Today we applied the topics we covered on Thursday (mean, median, grequency histograms, etc) to the technology we have at hand: the graphing calculator. You should be able to graph functions, use the tables function, enter in a data list, apply 1-variable statistics to a single list of data, plot a histogram or box plot using Stat Plot, or enter in two lists and use the Stat Plot to graph a scatterplot. By Thursday you should have the Quadratic Formula programmed into your calculator. This and the "Evaluate" program are the only two programs allowed in this class. If you have others, save the programs (copy them to another calculator or to paper) and delete them for the semester. Thursday, Jan. 17 Welcome to College Algebra with Data Analysis!
