Assignment 2
Assignment 2
In this assignment you will be using Word/Excel to produce documents with text, equations,
charts, hyperlinks, and figures. Specifically, two documents will be
created. A Word version and an HTML version. Note: This document was
first created in Word and then effortlessly converted into HTML.
Important: the size of the documents you will be creating can be
fairly large, especially if the documents include graphics (about two or
three times larger than the capacity of an "HD" diskette, for this
assignment). If you would like to save all of your work, buy a zip disk
for storage (and work on a machine that has a zip drive). Otherwise,
determine whether you can save your work in the \TEMP directory, and
send the eventual HTML document you create; the WORD/EXCEL file will
eventually be destroyed. If either
of these options is not available to you on a particular machine,
you will need to find a machine on campus that does (try Rm 226 Math).
Instructions
Click New Office Document, select
Blank Document. Notice that you have the office helper
checking out your activities. You will use the office helper as a source
of information and of tips at every stage of this assignment (except for
a very crucial aspect, help is made deliberately skimpy in this
instruction sheet to force you to fish around for information on your
computer).

- You will be typing a text in the document. For practice, you will
have three paragraphs to type. The text is devoted to sales figures in
four regions of the United States (The text can be fictional or come
from a magazine or newspaper). The first
paragraph will be followed by a drawing of the sales regions in the US
(a picture of the US which can be edited is available, ask office
helper. On some systems, the map of the US may not be available.
If such is the case, in place of the map with sales figures, write the
details of your seach of the map and convince us that the system you
were on indeed did not have such a image document),
the third paragraph will be followed by a table and chart detailing your
company’s annual sales figures (created with excel), the third
paragraph, which must appear in the second page of this document,
will terminate with a hyperlink to another very short word
document, described below. The document follows the format shown above.
We strongly suggest that you save the document as HTML and load it into
web browser to check how the Windows environment is translating your
work...you might find that certain aspects of your design might get
ignored or modified.
The title of the the text will be in bold face
Every appearance of your computer product must be in italics.
In the design of your document, we encourage you to use every
feature and option on your computer (a good way to experiment
is to continuously save copies of the document at each stage of the
construction. Make a distinction between a file that is an experiment
and the one that corresponds to the eventual document. Explore
thoroughly the software capabilities by trying things out).
In fact, you should always be saving a file from time to time, to insure
not losing too much work should a fatal failure of the system or of the
operator make you lose the current working document.
Please turn in an assignment that is cleanly laid out,
without excessive gimmicks.
The chart and table of sales figures for every quarter of the year will be totalled on each column, corresponding to each region. Averages of the rows should be presented as well. The chart and tables should be titled and the rows and columns labeled.
The hyperlink that ends the text should link the document to another document, which includes the names and affiliations of your four employees.
Save the final document. Also, try to create an HTML version of the
document by saving it as HTML (under the file menu). Try this HTML
version out by loading it as a file into your web browser (you may want
to note the differences between a word/html document and one that is
written in native HTML (use the view source capability of your web
browser).
TIPS
- Instructions on how to include an Excel spreadsheet into a Word document can be obtained by typing insert spreadsheet in the search window of the office helper.
- Instructions on how to include a hypertext link can be obtained by typing create hyperlink in the search window of the office helper.
