Building Human Flourishing Themes into the Teaching of Math

Mathematics Education Seminar

Building Human Flourishing Themes into the Teaching of Math
Series: Mathematics Education Seminar
Location: ENR2 S395
Presenter: Dr. Francis Su, Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics, Harvey Mudd College

In an effort to cover material, it is easy for us to overlook what we take out of math instruction that actually makes it appealing.  Students will be more motivated to learn mathematics if you appeal to their basic human desires, such as: for exploration, for play, for beauty, for struggle, for community.  We’ll explore practical ways to build human themes into the teaching of mathematics.

(This is a series of NSF Noyce Seminars for the AZ Noyce Mathematics Teaching (MaTh) Scholars Project in Secondary Mathematics Education (PI: Cynthia Anhalt; Co-PI: Marta Civil; Co-PI: Rebecca McGraw; Co-PI: Jennifer Wolfe).)
