They Had 5 Apples: What's Preventing Us from Integrating Queer Theory into the Classroom
Series: Mathematics Education Seminar
Presenter: Bailey Cooper, SMEP graduate, May 2021
How can we help queer students maximize their learning in math classrooms? Previously, researchers have proposed utilizing different aspects of queer theory such as adding queer representation into curricula or "queering" math as a field, but all of these fail to consider one critical factor: the classroom environment in which they are to implement them. In this seminar, we will discuss why the classroom environment is a crucial consideration in our endeavor to promote queer students' achievement.
This is a series of NSF Noyce Seminars for the AZ Noyce Mathematics Teaching (MaTh) Scholars Project in Secondary Mathematics Education (PI: Cynthia Anhalt; Co-PI: Marta Civil; Co-PI: Rebecca McGraw; Co-PI: Jennifer Wolfe). Please contact Jennifer Wolfe (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in attending.
