Creating a sense of belonging and normalizing struggle in College Algebra

Mathematics Instruction Colloquium

Creating a sense of belonging and normalizing struggle in College Algebra
Series: Mathematics Instruction Colloquium
Location: Online
Presenter: Taryn Laird, Tina Deemer, and Fiona McCann, UArizona Dept. of Mathematics

Inspired by a study done at the University of Pittsburgh, the Math 112 instructional team implemented an activity at the beginning of the semester to create a sense of belonging in the virtual classroom.  Our goal was to create a classroom climate in which struggle is something that most everyone encounters and is normalized.  We will give a brief overview of the University of Pittsburgh study, explain how we implemented the activity in the Math 112 classes this semester, and wrap up with a discussion regarding our results and observations in the classroom since implementing the activity this semester.
