(Hydro)-dynamics of Star and Planet Formation
The study of the formation of planets and stars leverages a wide array of numerical methods for solving complex systems of equations. We must resolve non-linear instabilities and discontinuities. We need to maintain extraordinary precision to conserve energy when we numerically integrate the relatively simple equations of motion that govern point masses. In this talk I will touch on both the successful applications of these methodologies as well their diverse modes of failure. In the process I will review some of the most exciting recent discoveries in the rapidly evolving field of planet formation.
