Math 506A: Research on the Learning of Mathematics Fall 2004 Instructor: Dr. McGraw Time: Tuesday 5:30pm-8pm Location: Math East 143 This course combines research on the development of students’ understandings of specific mathematical topics with research on learning theories related to mathematics education. Students in this course will examine research on the learning of topics such as number and operation and spatial reasoning (elementary level), algebra and reasoning and proof (secondary level), and calculus and advanced mathematical thinking (college level). Learning theories addressed in this course include constructivism, social theories of learning, emergent and enactivist perspectives, models and modeling, and critical theory. Note: This course CAN be counted as an “outside” course for mathematics graduate students whose primary area of focus in not mathematics education.
