Military Service, United States Navy
I was commissioned Ensign in the United States Navy upon graduation
from Tufts University, and served thirty years, mostly in Submarines,
commanding USS John Marshall (SSN-611). I retired in June 1991 at the
rank of Captain (O-6).
- 6/61 to 6/63 USS Basilone (DDe824): Division Officer, Navigator.
- 6/63 to 5/64 US Naval Academy: Instructor of Mathematics (calculus).
- 6/64 to 11/64 US Naval Submarine School, New London: Student.
- 11/64 to 5/65 US Naval Nuclear Power School, Mare Island CA: Student.
- 5/65 to 11/65 US Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, Windsor, CT: Student.
- 11/65 to 1/66 Commander Submarine Flotilla Two, New London CT: Staff
- 1/66 to 4/66 US Naval Guided Missile School, Dam Neck, VA: Student
(navigation).
- 4/66 to 2/69 USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN600): Division Officer.
- 2/69 to 4/69 US Naval Guided Missile School, Dam Neck, VA: Student.
- 4/69 to 6/73 USS Patrick Henry (SSBN599): Navigator.
- 7/73 to 7/76 USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN601): Executive Officer.
- 7/76 to 11/76 USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN600): Executive
Officer.
- 11/76 to 1/78 Commander Submarine Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet:
Staff officer, missile patrol scheduling.
- 1/78 to 4/79 Various schools in preparation for command.
- 4/79 to 8/82 USS John Marshall (SSBN/SSN611): Commanding
Officer. Completed three Polaris missile patrols in the Pacific, then
changed home port to Charleston, South Carolina, where the ship was
converted to an attack mission and deployed to the Mediterranean.
- 8/82 to 9/85 The Startegic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base,
Omaha, NE: Representative of the US Commander in Chief, Atlantic.
- 9/85 to 4/87 Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Pentagon:
Strategic Plans and Programs Officer.
- 4/87 to 6/91 US Naval War College, Newport, RI: Student, then
faculty. Held Charles A. Lockwood Chair of Submarine Warfare, and led
one division of the Operations Department.
Teaching Experience
- Instructor In Mathematics at the US Naval Academy Academic Year
1963-64. Taught calculus.
- Instructor, US Naval War College, 1988-1991 Taught Strategy and
Operational Art.
- Graduate Teaching Assistant, Mathematics Department University of
Arizona, 1991-97.
- Adjunct Faculty, Mathematics Department, University of Arizona,

- As part of the Mathematics Education
Program I participated in three one semester practicums:
- Mission View Elementary School, in a combined third through fifth
grade bilingual (Spanish) classroom with a math and science focus.
- Flowing Wells Junior High School, in two classrooms, one eighth
grade algebra and one transition mathematics.
- Flowing Wells High School, transition mathematics, algebra and
calculus.
