Week 4

  1. On Monday, September 14: The discussion leaders give their presentation on Paper I and lead the in-class discussion.
  2. Due Wednesday, September 16:
    • The discussion leaders post a brief written report on Paper I, based on their presentation and on the in-class discussion.
    • Read Paper II, an article by M. Newman, entitled The Physics of Networks.
  3. Due Friday, September 18: Participate in the D2L online forum entitled The Physics of Networks I. Ask any basic question about the topics mentioned in the article that you would like to see clarified during the next course meeting.
  4. Due Saturday, September 19: All students should use the D2L forum entitled Meteorology and climate modeling III to post comments on the report prepared by the discussion leaders.

Weeks 2 & 3

  1. Due Wednesday, September 9: Participate in the D2L online forum entitled Meteorology and climate modeling II. The discussion leaders need to take the lead, but everyone is expected to contribute. Do not wait till the last minute to participate. Your grade will reflect the importance and relevance of your contributions.
    The discussion should address the following points:
    • Development of meteorology as a science: reflect on the key steps and discoveries/advances that changed the field. Describe the nature of the obstacles that had to be surmounted in order to move forward.
    • Identify particular individuals who had an important role in the development of the field. Describe this role. Explain how their ability to think ahead of their time or across disciplines helped achieve progress. Explain how a solution was found to solve each problem.
    • Identify the various areas of physics, mathematics, numerical analysis, engineering, etc that were involved in developing meteorology as a science. In what courses are these topics typically taught?
    • Generalize and discuss of how scientific progress is made. Explain what it takes for an individual or a group of individuals to be able to significantly change their field.
  2. By the end of week 3, the discussion leaders will have prepared a brief presentation that summarizes the online discussion and addresses the points listed above.

Week 1

  1. Read Paper I, an article by P. Lynch, entitled The origins of computer weather prediction and climate modeling.
  2. Due Friday, August 28: Participate in the D2L online forum entitled Meteorology and climate modeling I. Ask any basic question about the topics mentioned in Paper I that you would like to see clarified during the next course meeting.
  3. Volunteer (send me an email) to be a discussion leader for Paper I. We need 3 discussion leaders.
