Assignments


Week 1

In class

  • Introduction to MATLAB, Sections 1, 2, and 4. Type up your answers. Include MATLAB input commands and corresponding outputs, as well as appropriate figures. You should have enough time to finish the assignment in class. When you are done, place a copy in the D2L dropbox called Introduction to MATLAB. Your work will be graded. The dropbox will close on Sunday, August 31st at noon.

  • Select an article that will make the basis of your oral report.

  • Complete the Experiments with fractals assignment. As for the previous assignment, type up your answers and place a copy of your work in the D2L dropbox called Experiments with fractals. This dropbox will close on Friday, September 5th, at noon.

Homework

  • Do the D2L quiz on Plagiarism and related issues. It is due on Thursday, August 28th at midnight.

  • Written essay: choose one of the following.
    • Assignment 1: Read the prespective by D. Koshland, entitled The cha-cha-cha theory of scientific discovery. Select 3 scientific discoveries that you are familiar with (if not, do some preliminary research online). In a brief (one page) essay, describe the essence of these discoveries, and discuss how they would fit in Koshland's classification.
    • Assignment 2: Read the perspective by H. Varmus, entitled The impact of physics on biology and medicine. In a brief (one page) essay, summarize the main ideas discussed in this article, and give your opinion on how they have fared.
    Place your work in the D2L dropbox called Written Essay 1. This dropbox will close on Sunday, September 7th at noon.

  • Choose one of the articles or topics mentioned in the introduction or in the diffusion sections of this module. Identify the key points that are being addressed. Make a list of questions that you might have after your first reading. Your work will be discussed in class. Start organizing a 15-minute oral report on the article or topic you have chosen.

Week 2

In class

  • Finish the "Experiments with fractals" assignment. The corresponding dropbox will close on Friday, September 5th, at noon.

  • Progress report on your oral presentations.

  • Work on the Introduction to partial differential equations assignment. This assignment will be graded.

Homework

  • Problems on dimensional analysis and scalings, due in class on Thursday, September 11th.

  • Continue working on your oral report. In particular, make sure that you are prepared to address questions related to the material you will present. Some class time will be reserved to discuss your work and to assess how well you are progressing.

Week 3

In class

  • Quiz on homework problems, on Thursday, September 11th.

  • Experiments with diffusion. Type up your answers and place your work in the corresponding D2L dropbox. It closes on Friday, September 12th at noon.

  • Oral presentations. We will have four presentations, of 15 or 30 mn each (depending on the number of speakers), plus questions.

Homework

  • Finish preparing your oral presentation. You will be judged on the contents, on your knowledge of the material, and on your ability to present a complete analysis of the topic of interest by combining perspectives from different areas of the sciences. Place a copy of your slides (PowerPoint or PDF) in the corresponding D2L dropbox. It closes on Tuesday, September 16th at 2pm.
