Title:  The multitude of ways to make an impact with math outside/after academia

Description:  Many who pursue degrees in the mathematical sciences do so because of the fulfilling nature of making advances with our mathematical skills and work.  In academia this often manifests as reasarch, publications, and presenting work to other mathematicians.  In industry impact and mathematical advances can take different forms and occur in far differnet ways:  patents, deployed capabilities, profitability increases, project course changes, .... and I have good news:  these forms of impact can be feeply fulfilling and challenge the mathematician as much and possibly more than that of a researcher.  In this talk ill share some of my history grappling with the transition from academia and research based impact to a that of an applied mathematical scientist in several industries and sectors.  My goal is to share and discuss the many good ways mathematicians do and engage in fulfilling impactful work in industry.

Title: What do mathematicians do at a Department of Energy laboratory?

The Department of Energy laboratories offer long term career development for mathematicians, starting from primarily technical roles and moving up to project leaders responsible for budgets on the order of millions of dollars per year.  I will discuss the day-to-day roles of a few of my colleagues with mathematics backgrounds, including their research, education, and leadership activities.
