When
Culture, Place, and AI in the Mathematics Classroom
How can mathematics lessons connect students to the world around them while using emerging tools responsibly? This session explores how culture and place can ground mathematics instruction in meaningful contexts, drawing on a version of the “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors” metaphor. I will share a progression of lessons shaped with AI, showing how teacher expertise can guide technology to produce activities that are both curriculum-aligned and culturally authentic. Examples include lessons drawn from vignettes found on the Global Math Stories website. Participants will leave with resources they can adapt immediately and insights into how AI can serve as a thought partner in designing powerful mathematics experiences.
