Course Objectives
- To extend precalculus skills by way of a brief integrated review of these skills as needed in calculus.
- To reinforce manipulative skills in the form of simplifying expressions and solving equations in the context of solving problems.
- To promote a problem solving approach through applications.
- To provide a sufficient background for Math 122B.
Math 122A:
- Math 122A is a 1-unit course with course content covered from August 25th through October 15th, 2025.
- Students who complete Math 122A with a grade of C or higher will be eligible to continue on to Math 122B (First Semester Calculus). Students who do not complete Math 122A with a grade of C or higher will be administratively switched out of Math 122B and into Math 120R (Calculus Preparation).
- For Main Campus students, both Math 122B and Math 120R will begin on Wednesday, September 17th, 2025.

THINK TANK (free tutoring for UArizona students)
- Graphing Calculator information for Main Campus students (TI-83 or TI-84 are recommended)
- A graphing calculator is required for Math 122A. We recommend any model in the TI-83 or TI-84 series.
- Models that can perform symbolic calculations (also known as CAS) are NOT allowed on exams and quizzes. CAS models include (but are not limited to) the TI-89, TI NSpire CAS, HP 50g, and Casio Classpad 330.

- Students are not allowed to share calculators during exams and quizzes.
- *The Desmos phone app is not allowed on the final exam.*
- Textbook:
- Math 122A covers Chapter 1 of the 6th edition of Calculus, Single Variable; Hughes-Hallett, et al; Wiley.
- As a courtesy, this chapter is available free of charge as a pdf posted on the Brightspace (D2L) course page. All students officially enrolled in Math 122A will have access to this pdf for the duration of the course.
- WebAssign:
- Math 122A uses a computer grading program called WebAssign for the common homework assignments.
- As a courtesy, WebAssign access will be free of charge. All students officially enrolled in Math 122A will have access to the WebAssign assignments. Instructions for logging into WebAssign can be found on the Brightspace (D2L) course page.

How it Works:
- Math 122A is designed as a 3-week course. Because we offer students an opportunity to take a second final exam to improve their grade, we offer it as a 7-week course.
- Continued registration into Math 122B or administrative switch into Math 120R is determined by the course grade earned as of September 13th. Official course grades will not be entered into UAccess until October 16th. More information about the final exam and registration dates can be found in the Course Policy module in Brightspace (D2L).
- Students who do not withdraw from Math 122A will have the option of retaking another final exam, in order to improve their Math 122A grade. More details will be posted in the Math 122A Brightspace (D2L) site later. Note - This retake exam is optional.
