Math 587, Asymptotic Methods and Perturbation Theory

This course is a broad overview of one of the fundamental tools used in applied mathematics. Topics will include:

  • Approximations for algebraic and ordinary differential equations, bifurcations.
  • Approximations of integrals (stationary phase, steepest descents, etc.)
  • Methods of matched asymptotics and multiple scales (including WKB expansion)
  • Homogenization
  • Applications in mechanics and material science, math biology, pattern formation, nonlinear optics,...

Below are notes and/or slides used in this course. For other current course information, see D2L.
